What is Dr Sketchy’s?

Dr. Sketchy’s is the little Brooklyn event that became a movement.

When many artists think of life drawing, they think of sterile rooms, bad lighting and models with nary a hint of personality.

Dr Sketchy’s is here to change all that.

A twice-monthly serving of some of the best Burlesque talent in the country (liberally seasoned with some surprise guests) - who pose and perform for you to indulge your artistic drawing leanings.

Started in Brooklyn New York by artist and burlesque girl Molly Crabapple,Dr Sketchy’s now has over 30 branches around the globe, including Hollywood, London, Berlin, Edinburgh, Toronto, Auckland and Melbourne. It’s also spawned a companion book, Dr Sketchy’s Official Rainy Day Colouring Book, Crabapple and John Leavitt, published by Sepulculture Books.

Dr Sketchy’s Sydney was started in April 2007 by Jac Bowie Worldwide. They are Australia’s leading Burlesque, Vaudeville & Vintage Agency. After the success of The Burlesque Ball in Australia, and with the Jac Bowie Agency having some of the best burlesque, circus and vintage performers and models, it made sense to Jac Bowie to make contact with Molly Crabapple and commence the franchise in Sydney.

Since it’s beginnings, Dr Sketchy’s in Sydney has gone on to become one of the most successful branches in the world, featuring a feast of local and international performers. The branch has not only been a hit with guests - constantly featured in the media including TV, Sydney Morning Herald, The Lonely Planet, Time Out Magazine, Cherrie Magazine, Daily Addict, Sydney City Weekly and many many more. Dr Sketchy’s Sydney was also recently the Farmer’s choice for his group date with the female contestants on TV show Farmer Wants A Wife and is now listed as a must do “date” in the Sydney edition of “Tomorrow’s Date” cards.

Since it’s inception in ‘05 Dr Sketchy’s has received international media coverage. Time Out NY says: “If you’re looking for life drawing classes, forget Pratt. Try Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School”, while the Melbourne Sunday Age promises that Dr Sketchy’s “will cure you of every boring art class you’ve ever been to."
